LiDAR Topographic Maps Digital Elevation Models Building Models

What is LiDAR?

LiDAR sensing can generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape of the Earth and its surface characteristics into a point cloud. These point clouds can be used to generate geospatial products, such as topography contour maps, digital elevation models, canopy models, and building models.

What Are We Using it For?

Combining ‘octocopter’ technology with LIDAR, we will analyze fields and identify sites where UXO are likely to be uncovered, starting in Laos. LIDAR is a crucial system for this project, as it can easily see through vegetation and creates detailed maps of the terrain – even in Laos’ densely-vegetated forests. Surveyors will be able to use the maps to look for topographical signs which suggest past bombing activity, surrounding trenches and bunkers for example.
